  • Geon Christian Children’s Home Christmas Play 2007

This was performed during our yearly, “Thank You Event” in the orphanage’s church in front of a packed audience that consisted of many of the orphanage’s sponsors (businessmen, church elders, and such) and volunteers.  The kids were nervous (Eun Jin mouths the word, “Scary” in Korean before the play begins) but I think they did great considering the play was all in their 2nd language.  Korean kids are usually really timid about speaking English in front of other people because they don’t want to be teased because of their accent.

Soo Min, the boy who plays Joseph, had knee surgery a couple months ago and is still recovering so he had a little limp.

Ironically, both my sisters were very active in drama in high school.  Me… I stayed as far away from theatre as I could.  And here I am having to write and direct (and act in) a play for kids in a children’s home in Korea to perform in a foreign language.  Madness, I tells you.  It was God’s grace that everything worked out, it really was.  Praise God!

I hope you enjoyed the video!  God bless!

  • Merry Christmas!

I’ve had a blessed Christmas with my kids and with my church friends.  It doesn’t feel like Christmas in Korea because it is celebrated a lot less and because I am away from my family.  But this morning a bunch of my friends from Jubilee church came with presents for each child at my home.  The sight of friends and all the wrapped gifts brought that Christmas feeling home.  A few of my Korean singer friends put on a show for the kids and then Pastor Dave (Jubilee pastor) gave a short message before we gave the gifts out.  During the short message he asked the kids whether they would prefer receiving him or receiving a Christmas gift.  A bunch of the kids chanted, “Gift!  Gift!  Gift!” (I don’t know whether he expected them to say that or if it backfired on him).  So then he called me up and asked the kids, “Which would you prefer to have, JM or a Christmas gift?”  Then all the kids yelled back, “JM!!!”  (Phew, I passed the test ), so he was able to weave that into showing how the gift of Jesus is greater than any other gift we could receive.  As I passed the older kids walking back to my seat I winked at them and said, “Thanks, I’ll give you guys a gift.”  They laughed.

One of my kids gave me a Christmas card (I’ve told her of my vision to plant orphanages in North Korean and North China)…

    Hello!
    Today is Christmas!
So I hope you will happy.
I always thank you for teach English.
I pray for you and your dream.
    Merry Christmas

God is good.  Merry Christmas everyone!!!

  • Recently my friends Jane and Melissa came and visited my home.  We took four of the younger girls and Kyung Mi dorm mother out for dinner.  Jane knows the girls and Kyung Mi well while Melissa is a prayer sponsor for one of the girls, Soo Jin.  We first had 돼지갈비 (pig ribs) and then we had 아이스크림 (ice cream).  Good times… enjoy the pics!

Hopefully I’ll have a video clip posted by next week of the Christmas performance night we had tonight… I directed my English students in a Christmas skit and they did great, praise God!  My friend video recorded it all and will give me the DVD copy soon.  Then I will post it.  God bless!

  • Children’s Manual please…

If you ever want to experience a wave pool of emotions, just stop by my home.    Ups and downs are so common you would think I would be used to it by now after living here for nearly two years… and I think I am getting there, but God still has a lot of training for me.  I view this home as training ground for learning to love the hurting and I pray for more full time volunteers to come join the orphanage ministry here in Seoul (there are 22 more homes in the city that are in need of a full time volunteer, come on out!).  The training is very real.  Its not just a matter of learning how to discipline kids, but also how to be sensitive to their scars and show them patient, enduring love.  Sometimes when I am around kids who are in a deep funk and “shut down” (unresponsive), the funk can get on me as well and I’ll find myself discouraged and just wanting to get out of here.  I’ve noticed I’m getting stronger in that I find myself praying sooner after these struggles, but I’m still not immune yet.  And so the training continues.

God led me to journal about each day since I came here to the home.  It helps.  God sends so many little blessings each day but sometimes I forget them when I’m focused on a struggle/discouragement with a child.  I have to remember the blessings.  And one of the greatest blessings is when I am walking outside and a child sees me at a far distance, calls my name, comes running to me with arms open wide, and jumps up into my arms.  That my friends is a blessing.

Full time volunteering, anyone?  Its a roller coaster, but a blessed one.  Please contact me, the Lord will lead you and will make a way!

  • My story… Come Quickly Jesus

As I grew with the Lord in college, my greatest yearning became to see His kingdom come and for all pain in the world to end (Revelation 21:4).  My heart would break as I would pray for hurting friends and for lost nations.  I felt then that the only hope was for Jesus to quickly return and put an end to sin.  I began praying fervently for His return.

During this time God comforted me by revealing His great heart for humanity.  I soon understood that Jesus will not return until every tribe, tongue, and nation has had a chance to receive the Gospel (Matthew 24:14).  I understood that when I pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done,” I am not just praying for Christ to return physically, I am praying for Him to reveal His kingdom through me.  Jesus told His disciples to prepare the way for him and that as they would do God’s work they were to proclaim, “The kingdom of God is near you” (Matthew 10:7, Luke 10:9).  Jesus already did the greatest act of love that we could ask for by dying for us and then resurrecting, thus overcoming sin and death.  Now we are called to be His hands and His feet to the broken and lost of the world (Isaiah 61:1-3, John 13:34-35, Micah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20).

I understood that the only way for me to “truly be living” would be for me to full out obey God’s will for my life (Matthew 6:10).  I prayed fervently and fasted often throughout college, asking God to reveal His will for me.  After graduating in 2005, God guided me to an orphanage (Geon Christian Children’s Home) in South Korea to live and serve as a full time volunteer in the home.  God has given me a long term vision of learning the language, learning to love the children as God loves them, recruiting and building a team of full time orphanage volunteers, and eventually going to North Korea and North China to build orphanages there.  In the short term God has led me to start up an orphanage ministry for English speaking churches in Seoul.  The ministry (Jerusalem Ministry) currently serves six orphanages in Seoul and is growing.

Through God’s leading, Come Quickly Ministries was formed.  The ministry’s purpose is to help open the eyes of the church to the hurt in the world and the need for God’s work to be completed (Luke 10:2).  While I am currently the only full time supported missionary in the ministry, Come Quickly has been sending support to missionaries and pastors in Indonesia, Philippines, and other parts of the world.  Our hope is that the Church may rise up, fervently seek God’s will and prepare the way for His return.

I have lived and served in Geon Christian Children’s Home for two years now.  I continue to pray for a prayer movement to be stirred in my home and for the children’s eyes to be opened to their loving Creator.  God has granted me confidence by speaking clearly to my parents and to myself that I am following His will.  There is nothing else I would rather be doing.

Matthew 24:14 – And this Gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come

Revelation 22:20-21 – He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’  Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.  The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people.  Amen.

Matthew 6:10 – Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
