Making the Bok Um Bap 볶음밥
A couple weeks ago I was playing games with a few of my English students after tutoring them and we ended up missing dinner by accident. We decided to make bok um bap (pan fried rice). The girls brought kimchi and rice from the cafeteria and I pulled out some eggs, a summer sausage I received in a care package, butter, and some cheddar cheese. Together with the three girls we made some killer bok um bap, really the best I’ve had. Maybe we were just hungry so it tasted good, but the girls wanted to do it again. Lately my schedule has been busy, but I made sure tonight that we could get together and do it. Soo Jin, one of the girls was sick though, so only Se Bin and Hae Ji were able to come. We still had a good time. Let me take you through the process…
First step is slicing/cutting up the sausage and kimchi
Hae Ji is on the left
Next is pan frying the kimchi with some butter
Trying to get Hae Ji to look at the camera (two years ago these girls loved taking pictures of each other, they are getting older….. *sigh*)
Hae Ji finally complies… I win!
Se Bin took some pleading as well, but she eventually allowed me to take a picture
Due to running around, I missed taking pictures of some of the steps. After frying the kimchi a little we added the sausage and fried it some more. Then we added a ton of rice to it. After stirring that up a bit we added three eggs to it and continued to stir it. Last, the girls here are adding a little cheese
Kyung Mi dorm mother joined us to eat and took a couple pictures. The girls turned on the TV as we were wrapping up the cooking and here I’m trying to get Se Bin’s attention (she is watching a show)
Serving the bok um bap
I quickly fried some eggs after serving the rice and we all had a good meal. I still have some of the summer sausage left so maybe we will cook one more time before I leave to visit America on the 29th this month. God bless!
