  • Prosperity Gospel

Those two words really stir up a lot of Christians’ emotions.  Dangerous words.  A famous pastor and author John Piper gives quite a rant against the properity gospel here… http://www.tangle.com/view_video?viewkey=faf0159744aecaf5c732.  Its a lot of anger, and perhaps deservedly so.  A family in his congregation had recently lost their little daughter.  Some prosperity gospel preachers would preach that with God’s blessings no such tradgedy would come upon a Christian.  I think these are the people Piper is voicing his anger against… those who preach a prosperity gospel across the board with “no strings attached.”  Those who preach the Gospel as a way of making their own money or fame or in a way that makes the Gospel all about money or earthly success/prosperity.

What are my thoughts?  I’m just going to use Scripture.  Scripture does show that Christians are meant to be the head and not the tail (Deut 28:1-14).  I believe I will, “feast on the wealth of the nations, and in their riches I will boast” (Isaiah 61:6).  I believe I am the seed of Abraham and have inherited the blessings of Abraham (Galatians 3:29).  I believe God does not let the righteous go hungry (Proverbs 10:3) and that He has come that I may have life and have it to the full (John 10:10).  Does that mean my objective or contentment is found in riches?  Not a chance.  Does that mean I think my life will always be easy?  Not a chance.  God also promises trials that will make me stronger (James 1:2-3).  God says it has been “Granted to us to suffer for Him” (Philippians 1:29).  But in my struggles/suffering, I will continue to ask God for healing, for provision, for deliverance, for strength, and for BLESSING (dictionary definition: “special favor, mercy, gift”).  And I believe God will grant it… I may have to wait and at times I might not see prayers answered in the way I expect… but that doesn’t mean I will give up on His promises.  Heidi Baker’s stories are good examples (she is a missionary in Mozambique).  She is used to heal and deliver so many, but she herself undergoes different illnesses.  Some are because she pushes herself too hard, but others I believe God allows her to endure to teach her more compassion for the sick and grant her more intimacy with Him.  For most times she is sick she ends up getting miraculously healed, but after a time of suffering.  So is she invincible?  No way.  And sometimes the people she prays for end up passing away.  But does that mean the promises of God are false?  Not a chance.  In such times we have to trust in God’s sovereignty, weep for the loss, ask for more faith, and continue on.  We have to understand that God’s ways are higher (Isaiah 55:9) and we can’t explain everything.  Sometimes prosperity Gospel is presented in a way that puts God in a box or makes it seem too easy… that is wrong.  But to not claim God’s promises is also wrong.  God is our Father and our friend.  He wants us to talk to Him.  If our heart is pure, I don’t think God is angry if we ask for favor at our work, a good husband or wife, or a decent car.  In fact, I believe He delights in hearing our requests and answering many of them.  Will He give us everything we want?  Of course not.  He knows what is best and will withhold certain requests for our own good.

You could say some of the stronger enemies of the prosperity gospel could be compared to the prodigal son’s brother.  They have been faithful in their duties, but get jealous when someone seemingly undeserving gets blessed.  They didn’t even know that if they “just asked” they too could enjoy their Father’s favor (Luke 15:31).  They’ve been too busy acting more like a servant than enjoying some of the benefits of being a son.  Its wrong to parade God’s blessings as why we love Him.  That is evil and its a danger many prosperity preachers can fall into.  But I also believe its wrong to ignore or reject God’s blessings saying we don’t need them and only need Him.  As a father figure for my kids, I would be hurt if I offered them presents but they rejected them and said, “Its okay JM, we love you, we don’t need what you are offering.”  I will then just give the presents to the kids who ask and are grateful.  This would be like a family coming together at Christmas with gifts in their hands for each other, as simple earthly expressions of their love, and then saying to one another, “No thanks, I don’t need this expression of your love.  I know you love me.”

The song I put up really expresses my heart.  I think you all know I’ve given my life to God.  I’m a missionary serving in an orphanage and direct a small orphanage ministry.  I desire to die for Christ.  I’m not in it for money or fame or whatever, my heart is to see Jesus return.  I hope that is understood.  I will continue to claim God’s promises and ask for His favor and prosperity.  If in time God chooses to raise me up like Joseph, Daniel, Mordecai, Nehemiah, and even David and grant me special favor/prosperity over others, its not going to be for my benefit but for God’s kingdom.  I’m His.  I’ll appreciate the favor, will enjoy any gift He grants me along the way, and will continue to claim more, with the motive being the same as those men of God: “Use me!  Come Lord Jesus!”  God is my treasure.

    God bless!

  • Pictures from the home…

Nearly everyday after dinner with the kids I will go outside and play with them… basketball, dodgeball, kickball, baseball, or other games.  My car trunk has turned into a P.E. teacher’s dream… playground balls, basketballs, soccer ball, baseballs, tennis balls, gloves, cones, and even ping pong paddles.  Its pretty messy.  The kids love it though.  Enjoy the pics!

  • Father’s Love… a little more…

I believe I’ve only tapped into the father’s love a little.  I believe there is so much more, but if I had too much of it I would collapse.  God is gradually giving me more as I’m getting more and more firmly rooted in Him.  God’s fatherly love is so pure, so strong, so protective, so affirming… His heart yearns and goes out to His children.  I’ve experienced this love now and then during prayer times alone and I always end up in tears, often for long periods of time.  It’s a love that originally put the yearning in my heart to pray for Jesus to return (comequickly).  I wanted the hurting to stop.  I wanted the hurting of those around me who had such broken lives to stop.  God soon corrected me that the answer isn’t to just pray that Jesus returns and puts an end to sin, but that I be used to spread His love and His healing to those around me.  God has given me the missionary heart to truly see His return (Matthew 24:14).  He has also given me a stronger desire to see the broken heart mended and the weak growing strong.  A love that speaks out that we aren’t meant to live as broken pieces of pottery.  Have you read Zechariah 11:7-13?  It’s a sad passage and a clear prophecy of Jesus, of His great love and yet our great rejection of Him.  In the passage, He is paid 30 pieces of silver for His shepherding, which is actually the price of a slave.  He was paid slave wages.  Interestingly, the money was given to the potter  (Zech 11:13).  In Matthew 27:5-7 Judas returns the wages of Jesus (thirty pieces of silver) to the temple and it is used to purchase the potter’s field.  The potter’s field is a junkyard of all the potter’s “mistakes”… the broken jars, broken cups, broken plates… things that are unusable and considered worthless.  But Jesus redeems them.  He redeems the field of broken vessels.  He takes what the world had tossed away and makes them new again.  This is the love God has for His people.  Its a love that sees inner beauty; that sees beyond the surface; a love that desires to redeem.  I believe I’ve only brushed the surface of this love in my relationship with God.  I want to see it released more.

    God bless!

  • Seoul Children’s Home Soccer Tournament 2009

This was my third year attending the annual soccer tournament.  My first year attending my home won the whole tournament for the first time in its history.  Nearly all our players from that team have graduated though so we are a lot younger now.  We won our first game today 2-1 before getting beaten by the reigning champs 5-1.  The second game was tough on my boys, but considering how young and small a lot of them are and how big the other team was, I thought they played admirably.  Here some pics and a video from today…

  • God’s Different Loves

God’s been revealing His love to me more lately.  God has taught me how to give and receive love as a brother to a sister (having two sisters), as a son, as a friend, as a servant, and even a bit as a father with the children at my home.  I’ve grown some in loving as a brother to a brother.  I’ve yet to experience the love a groom has for his bride.  Each love is different.  There are different emotions stirred from different people depending on the relationship.  Receiving approval/affirmation as a young son from a father is so powerful.  Receiving approval as a father from a young son is not as critical, rather it is the son receiving the affirmation and shining from it that moves the father.  I’m not saying that these different relationships have completely different types of love, it just seems each has certain different parts of love that are stronger than others… and for some it’s a part of love that can’t be found in other relationships (like the love of a bride and a groom).

I have a lot of love for all my friends.  But I have to admit, there are certain people that I feel a stronger love for.  Its stronger than a love as a friend, but its not a love as a lover.  There is a stronger love to shelter, to approve, and to bless for these certain people.  What I feel is that the love for the person is not just a love as a friend, but it incorporates the other loves as well… and for me often it’s a fatherly love that is stirring in me.  It brings a stronger love.  Its incorporating different parts of love from two different types of relationships.  As I experience this, it humbles me in thinking of just how powerful God’s love is for us because the love I feel at times for some people is so strong.  And again, its not the love a groom has towards his bride… I can only imagine how much stronger that love is.  And imagining all these loves being put together is so powerful.  That God calls us His bride, His son, and His friend… this love is too great to comprehend.  Even the love a good general has for his soldiers is powerful.  And the love of a good shepherd.  And the love of a thoughtful creator.  Different emotions are stirred in each relationship.  God’s love for each of us cannot fully be grasped… its too great and its too wonderful!

This is something I’ll likely write more about in the near future, particularly God’s love for us as a father.  May you receive more and more revelation of each of God’s love for you.  God bless!

  • Seoul Children’s Home Annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

This tournament marked my third year as basketball coach for my children’s home.  This was my first year having boys return from the previous team though, and we did much better than past tournaments.  We still lost though in the quarterfinals by 2 points (missed the last second game winning 3 point shot).  Thankfully, most of my boys are young and will be back for at least two more years, hungry to get that championship.  Here are some pics and short video clips from today…  I apologize for the action shots being hard to see… I’m not the best photographer and my camera isn’t that amazing either.  =)

  • Waiting is Worship…

In Leviticus 8 we read about the high priest Aaron’s special ordination.  Moses has to wash him, clothe him, anoint him, make sacrifices for him, and then anoint him again.  Its a long process and I imagine after these things Aaron thought it was all done… but then Moses gives him these instructions, “Do not leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days” (Leviticus 8:33).  Seven = complete.  Before Aaron could be considered fit for the duty of high priest, he needed to learn to wait on the Lord and develop an intimate relationship with Him (thus having to stay at the Tent of Meeting).  So many Christians, myself included, want to get moving into ministry as quick as possible.  We want to see God work in mightier ways.  But more important to God than the works is our worship to Him.  And God values our times of waiting on Him and growing more intimate with Him as a huge aspect of our worship.  This is so important that God even made the high priest wait the complete amount of time necessary to be intimate and dependent on the Lord enough to serve as a minister.

We wait on You Lord!  Draw us into a deeper relationship with You!  Amen.

  • Submission to Authority Part Deux

This subject has continued to be on my mind, so I thought I’d list a few of the key stories in the Bible of men and women who either submitted to authority or didn’t.

First, four examples of those who did NOT submit to authority:

Miriam and Aaron (Numbers 12) – They are Moses’ brother and sister and they gossip about Moses behind his back and then make claims that they are at the same level of authority as Moses.  CONSEQUENCE – God strongly rebukes them to their face and Miriam contracts leprosy for a week

Korah, Dathan, and Abiram (Numbers 16) – Korah (of the priests) and some tribal leaders all rebel against Moses and Aaron and claim that they have just as much authority.  They gather 250 leaders who want to take the priesthood from Aaron and change the structure of authority.  CONSEQUENCE – God opens up the earth to swallow the three men and their families alive.  Also, the 250 leaders who tried to put themselves above Aaron are consumed by God’s fire.  God isn’t playing.

Gehazi (2Kings 5) – Gehazi is the prophet Elisha’s servant.  Elisha gives a clear word that nothing is to be taken in tribute from Naaman after healing the man.  Gehazi questions Elisha’s decision and decides to ask Naaman for a gift.  He pursues Naaman and receives gifts from him.  Through the Spirit, Elisha finds out about Gehazi’s disobedience.  CONSEQUENCE – Gehazi and his descendants are cursed with leprosy.  God isn’t playing.

Uzziah (2Chronicles 26) – Uzziah is a great king of Judah who becomes very powerful.  But his pride gets the best of him and he tries to step over the authorities of the priests, entering the temple of God and burning incense.  He becomes angry at the priests who try and stop him.  CONSEQUENCE – Uzziah is struck with leprosy and excluded from God’s temple until the day of his death.  God isn’t playing.

Next, three examples of those who DID submit to authority:

Joseph (Genesis 39 – 41) – Joseph submits to the authority of Potiphar and is soon put in charge of the household, despite having been a slave.  Later he submits to the authority in prison and becomes in charge of the prisoners.  Later he submits to Pharoah’s authority and interprets his dreams and then faithfully and diligently serves him.  CONSEQUENCE – Joseph becomes second in all of Egypt and saves the nation, neighboring nations, and his own family from a horrible famine.  He receives great favor from Pharoah.

Daniel (Daniel 4) – Daniel is under King Nebuchadnezzar’s authority and is called to interpret a dream.  Despite Nebuchadnezzar having destroyed Daniel’s country and being known as an eccentric, pagan king, Daniel still submits to authority and even wishes for the best for his employer (Daniel 4:19).  CONSEQUENCE – Daniel’s continual submission to authority (in other chapters as well) results in him eventually being made second in the kingdom and receiving great favor from those in authority.

David (BEST EXAMPLE OF ALL… 1Samuel 16 – 2Samuel 1) – David is under King Saul’s authority.  King Saul, out of jealous rage, attempts to take David’s life multiple times.  Never will David lift up his hand against Saul or speak poorly of him.  When he has opportunities to take Saul’s life, he tells his friends repeatedly, “Surely I will not lift up my hand to the Lord’s anointed.”  David understands that authorities are set by God so he would not slander or attack Saul, despites Saul’s sinful actions.  CONSEQUENCE – David becomes king of Judah and then of all Israel.  He is considered the greatest king in the Bible and the Messiah would eventually come from his descendants.

1Peter 5:6 – Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.
