Sons Don’t Beg…
While at a healing conference recently the main speaker, Randy Clark, emphasized how important it is to never beg God in prayer. He told us in his healing ministry experience he has met many people who cry out to God in ways that seem to justify why a person should be healed or in ways that seem to put a guilt trip on God. Prayers such as, “God, this person is so kind and loving, why won’t you heal him?” “God, this person is in such pain. God, why don’t you heal?” “God, please please please please!” These prayers seem to communicate a lack of understanding in God’s nature and a wrong basis for healing.
God’s nature is to heal (Exodus 15:26). One of the names of God is Jehovah Rapha, The Lord Our Healer. Our basis for healing is on the blood of Jesus (Isaiah 53:5) and His command for us to heal others (Matthew10:7-8, Luke 10:9). A person is never healed because “they earned it.” Just as we can’t earn salvation we also can’t earn our healing. While we can take steps to help receive our healing (confess sin and repent, walk in faith, etc), in the end the healing comes from Him. To beg God for healing is to portray God as disinterested and not really wanting to heal and we must get His attention and plead and plead for Him to answer. It’s like we must squeeze God as much as we can for a drip of healing. But the truth is that God is good, He is love, and it is His nature to heal. With that known, we should be bold in prayer and have faith He will respond as we pray.
Good children don’t beg, they simply ask. Good parents don’t tolerate begging, but they respect petition. The difference is in tone and approach. For a child to beg and beg shows a belief that they can manipulate their parents by their behavior. But for a child to ask directly and wait shows that they believe in the goodness of their parents that they will do what is best for them. God loves for us to ask (Matthew 7:7, Luke 11:9-13), but He expects us to ask in faith (James 1:5-8). When we petition God for healing our prayers are to be based upon His promises and His goodness rather than anything else.
God bless!
